African prints

I have started this blog as a showroom for my creations crafted from african prints and vintage fabrics mostly from the 1970s. The designs are considered ideal for anything, patchwork and quilting, bags and clothes, you name it! Thus, before I start stacking up things I better fill you in on the "vitenge" history!

African prints also called wax prints are pure cotton fabrics, they are among the most colorful and dynamic in the world. They are hard-wearing, after all, they are produced for a market where they may have to withstand frequent, vigorous hand-washing over rocks in a local stream. In East Africa they are well known as ‘KITENGE’ or Kanga. It is worn, slept on, used as tablecloth by women, men and children. It is also a symbol of status and love. A man will buy the most beautiful wax to the wife, mistress, and girlfriend or in laws.
